Unakka Chemeen Chamanthi Podi is a bold, flavorful Kerala condiment made using dried prawns, roasted coconut, and spices. It has a strong aroma, spicy kick, and a delicious umami taste that makes even simple meals special.


🌿 Ingredients

  • Unakka chemmeen (dry prawns) – 1 cup
  • Grated coconut – 1½ cups
  • Shallots – 6–8
  • Dry red chillies – 6–10
  • Garlic – 4–5 cloves
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Tamarind – small piece
  • Salt – as needed
  • Coconut oil – 1–2 tsp

🍳 Preparation

  1. Roast dry prawns
    Clean and dry roast until crisp and aromatic. Keep aside.
  2. Roast coconut
    Heat coconut oil, add grated coconut, and roast till golden brown.
  3. Add spices & aromatics
    Add shallots, garlic, red chillies, and curry leaves. Roast well.
  4. Grind
    Add roasted prawns, tamarind, and salt. Grind into a coarse powder.
