The jackfruit flower, commonly known as Chakka Poovu in Kerala, is the early-stage edible part of the jackfruit tree. It is actually the male inflorescence of the Jackfruit tree, which appears as a small, elongated, green structure growing from the trunk or branches.
Unlike the large fruit that develops later from female flowers, jackfruit flowers are tender, fibrous, and mildly flavored. When young, they are soft and suitable for cooking. As they mature, they become tougher and less commonly used.
In traditional Kerala cuisine, jackfruit flowers are cleaned, finely chopped, and cooked into delicious dishes like thoran (stir-fry) or curries. They absorb spices well and have a slightly nutty, earthy taste with a unique texture similar to tender vegetables.
Apart from taste, jackfruit flowers are valued for their nutritional benefits. They are rich in dietary fiber and are believed to support digestion and overall health.
